An Abstract Union (Limited Edition) by Paul Stretton-Stephens
I conceived this piece after HRH Queen Elizabeth II celebrated 70 years on the throne. Weeks after this enormous occasion flags and bunting could be seen everywhere, a constant reminder of the joyous event. I studied two small union jacks nailed to a beam. They were positioned crossing each other by their respective flag poles and the wind made the flags flap incessantly causing a variation of design.
I experimented with the observation and recreated the union flag concept abstractly which could easily provide a metaphor for the state of the union.
